The Stages of Implementation Completion (SIC) is an 8-staged measure of implementation process and milestones. Data collected using the SIC has generated a large repository of both successful and non-successful real-world implementation efforts, allowing for robust analyses and generation of models for paths for implementation success. These models currently are being used to inform a randomized clinical trial evaluating the benefit of adding audit-and-feedback to inform purveyor-site interactions in the real-world adoption of evidence-based youth substance abuse prevention programs.

Presenter information:

Lisa Saldana, PhD
Senior Scientist
Oregon Social Learning Center

Dr. Saldana is an implementation scientist and intervention developer. Her research emphasizes the development of implementation tools and strategies to measure and facilitate implementation of evidence-based practice in real-world settings. Her intervention research has focused on the development of evidence-based programs for the treatment of parental substance abuse in the child welfare system.

News from the Nodes

Ohio Valley

OV NodeStudy sites have begun the site initiation process for the CTN-0080 MOMs study, led by Dr. Theresa Winhusen (Frankie Kropp, Project Manager) at the Ohio Valley Node.

The first five sites have launched: Gateway Community Services, Inc. (Jacksonville, FL; Florida Node Alliance) endorsed on July 2nd, Pregnancy Recovery Center/Magee Women’s Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA; Appalachian Node) endorsed on July 7th, SUPeRAD (Salt Lake City, UT; Greater Intermountain Node) endorsed on July 9th, and both Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, SC; Southern Consortium Node) and Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, TN; Ohio Valley Node) launched on July10th. One additional site has successfully completed Site Initiation Visits, and is awaiting endorsement later this month pending sIRB approval of COVID-related modifications to their Informed Consent Documents. The remaining six sites are preparing for Site Initiation Visits with hopes of launching in August.

Congratulations to the first five sites, as well as to the entire CTN0080 team!

Western States Node

WS NodeWestern States Node continues to serve as a training platform for workforce expansion. WSN investigators received three HRSA Addiction Medicine Fellowship Awards to expand training of physicians from diverse medical specialties in addiction medicine. Newly funded fellowships at University of California, San Francisco (Program Director Paula Lum), Stanford University (Program Director Anna Lembke), and Oregon Health & Science University (Program Director Todd Korthuis) offer a one-year comprehensive curriculum in clinical addiction medicine. Graduates integrate addiction medicine skills throughout the healthcare system and some pursue additional research training following their clinical fellowship. This is the first federal funding for addiction medicine physician workforce expansion.

Northeast Node

Northeast NodeWith its renewal, the Northeast Node is pleased to announce the birth of two new advisory groups to help identify significant and timely needs regarding substance use in our Northeastern communities: a Community Advisory Board and a Policy Advisory Board.

We will work with the Community Advisory Board, led by Node Core Investigator Dr. Steven Chapman, to best disseminate and implement “lessons learned” from CTN research in our communities.

Additionally, we will work with the Community Advisory Board to help identify more opportunities to align CTN efforts with other regional efforts focused on increasing access to state-of-the science treatments for substance use disorders (SUDs) and reducing harm from SUDs. Members of this Board include local treatment and community service program directors as well as members with lived experience.

We will work with the Policy Advisory Board, led by Node Core Investigator Dr. Mary Brunette, to help identify legislative and/or regulatory actions as well as payer policies that could best support implementation of state-of-the-science treatments for substance use disorders, with a particular focus on scaling-up and sustaining best practices. Members of this Board include local payors and state policy makers from each of our Node’s three states.

We hope to seek input from these boards on concept proposals for new research projects we could propose to conduct within the CTN in collaboration with other Nodes that may impact state/regional/national policy and/or models of payment for substance use disorder treatment as well as new community initiatives and interventions to meet the unique rural needs of providers and participants.

Addiction Science & Clinical Practice Call for Papers: Deadline Extended!

Addict Sci Clin Pract coverAddiction Science & Clinical Practice is preparing an upcoming special series on the opioid use disorder (OUD) care continuum, specifically articles describing broad research and data supported by the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN): its past effort in developing MOUD treatment and current effort in improving MOUD treatment quality. The series will commemorate 20 years of CTN research activities.

The deadline for submissions to this special issue, originally July 1, has now been extended to Fall 2020.

Funding for the article-processing charge is available thanks to the generosity of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network. This is subject to editorial acceptance and will be offered while funds are available. All submissions to ASCP are subject to editorial and peer review.

Reminder: CTN policy requires papers to be reviewed by the CTN Publications Committee (PC), prior to being submitted to ASCP. To participate in the issue, email your manuscript to Jack Blaine (jblaine@nida.nih.gov) and George Bigelow (bigelow@jhmi.edu) with a copy to Udi Ghitza (ghitzau@nida.nih.gov) and Landhing Moran (landhing.moran@nih.gov) in the Center for the Clinical Trials Network for review and approval.
