SUMMARY:Southwest Node: Partnering with Tribal Serving Programs to Enhance Culture in the Delivery of Substance Use Disorder Treatment
DESCRIPTION:This project (CTN-0096) looked at adding culture to care for Alaska Native and American Indian people who had problems with opioid use. The care was medication treatment. We wanted to see if culture would help more people start and stay in treatment. We worked with four clinics. We invited Alaska Native and American Indian people to be on our Collaborative Board to help us with this project. Two American Indian women led groups at each clinic. Each clinic chose its own way to include culture in medication treatment. After culture was added\, Alaska Native and American Indian customer-owners were more likely to start treatment and more likely to stay in treatment. SUMMARY:Northeast Node: Using AI and Passive Data to Improve Digital Assessment and Treatment of Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders
DESCRIPTION:Join the Northeast Node for the next installment of their Science Series: Using AI and Passive Data to Improve Digital Assessment and Treatment of Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders. \nPresented by Nicholas C. Jacobson\, PhD. \nDr. Jacobson\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Data Science and Psychiatry at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine\, where he directs the AI and Mental Health: Innovation in Technology Guided Healthcare (AIM HIGH) Laboratory. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed papers (H-index: 44)\, with a large portion focused on using passively collected smartphone and wearable sensor data to detect psychiatric disorders\, measure symptom severity\, and predict real-time changes in mental health. His work spans data from over 10\,000 participants across 100+ countries. \nIn this talk\, he will cover how these digital phenotyping methods have been applied within the CTN through the D-TECT study (CTN-0084-A2)\, his lab’s personalized digital therapeutics for co-occurring anxiety\, depression\, and substance use disorders\, and the 6.5-year development of Therabot\, a generative AI psychotherapy chatbot. Therabot was tested in the first randomized controlled trial of generative AI psychotherapy\, published in the New England Journal of Medicine AI\, where 210 participants showed large symptom reductions (d=0.63 to 0.90) and averaged over 6 hours of engagement across 24 days. He will close with implications for substance use treatment research.

DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Christian Hendershot\, PhD\, Keck School of Medicine\, University of Southern California (read more about Dr. Hendershot here) \n\nThis presentation will summarize emerging evidence for the efficacy of GLP-1 receptor agonists for substance use disorders. Recent and ongoing Phase 2 clinical trials will be reviewed\, and key clinical and implementation issues discussed. \nLearning objectives\n\n\nIdentify at least three (3) potential therapeutic benefits of GLP-1-based therapies for individuals with substance use disorder.\n\n\n\nDescribe at least three (3) common side effects and three (3) safety considerations for GLP-1-based therapies.\n\n\n\nExplain at least three (3) GLP-1-based therapies currently under evaluation for substance use disorder.\n\nAbout the presenter\nChristian Hendershot\, PhD\, is Professor of Population and Public Health Sciences and Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine\, University of Southern California\, and Director of Clinical Research at the USC Institute for Addiction Science. His research utilizes clinical\, cognitive\, neuroscience and psychopharmacology methods to study the etiology and treatment of substance use disorders. His recent work has included early Phase 2 trials of incretin therapies for substance use disorder\, including NIDA-funded projects evaluating the efficacy of GLP-1 receptor agonists for cigarette smoking.
