S.M.A.R.T. treatment planning using the ASI : Making required data collection useful.
This presentation provides information about the S.M.A.R.T. Treatment Planning Blending Team Product. S.M.A.R.T. Treatment Planning is a training package available in two formats: a 6-hour classroom format, which includes a trainer script, PowerPoint slides, handouts, and a reference list with examples; or a 4-6 week online application that focuses on skill development and application in the clinical setting. Presenters Carise, Jackson, and Stilen describe the purpose of the product, as well as laying out ten reasons why the ASI is still one of the most reliable and valid standardized assessment tools available. ASI data can be used at intake to help with initial treatment planning, and it can later be used for program evaluation purposes as well.
This presentation also describes the CASPAR Study (Computer Assisted System for Patient Assessment and Referral). This study hypothesized that a computer-based resource guide of various wrap-around social services could make it easier for counselors to locate and refer patients to a variety of additional social services, something that has been found to improve treatment outcomes. Counselors in the enhanced group of the study administered the ASI to determine whether or not their clients needed additional wrap-around services to begin with, and then used the computer-based resource guide to match such services to their patients? needs. The CASPAR Study determined that the enhanced treatment matching process not only increased patient retention (49% of patients in the enhanced group were still in treatment 90 days later, compared to only 12% of patients in the standard group), it also increased counselor retention. Evergreen Treatment Services, a CTP in the Washington Node, uses the ASI for a variety of treatment planning and program evaluation purposes, and a description of their approach concludes this presentation.
