Substance dependence and co-occurring psychiatric disorders: Best practices for diagnosis and clinical treatment.

This book was developed out of discussions during meetings of the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN) Co-Occurring Disorders Special Interest Group (SIG). Working group members included individual lead investigators in CTN research protocols and program directors and clinicians from community-based substance abuse treatment programs. One issue that emerged repeatedly during discussions was the need to help clinicians who work in substance abuse treatment settings learn more about co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

This book, developed through the SIG, is the first comprehensive handbook to provide a full treatment of all the most common psychiatric conditions that typically co-occur with substance use disorders. It is an essential guide for everyone who treats addiction, including psychiatric clinicians, designed to help treatment providers develop and improve critical diagnostic skills and create coordinated treatment plans that achieve positive outcomes.
