Adoption of HIV counseling and testing following completion of randomized clinical trial.

National Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network protocol CTN-0032 demonstrated the value of on-site rapid HIV testing in drug treatment centers, but found no additional benefit from HIV sexual risk reduction counseling. Lexington-Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council (LRADAC), a community-based treatment program in South Carolina was one of the twelve sites participating in the original study. After the study’s completion, LRADAC adopted the counseling and testing procedures used in the trial. The testing and counseling were piloted in the detoxification unit beginning in September 2009, with agency-wide implementation to follow in 2010 and plans to expand statewide in developments. This poster provides an example of successful “science to practice,” and further demonstrates that participation in research can facilitate programmatic change in community treatment programs.
