Motivational interviewing: Participant characteristics and early retention in community clinics.

This presentation outlines the aims, design, and outcomes of the NIDA-CTN-0005 Motivational Interviewing protocol. The specific aims of the project are 1) To evaluate the efficacy of MET (or MI), relative to standard care procedures at the participating CTPs, in enhancing treatment engagement and retention as well as in reducing substance use; and 2) To evaluate the durability of MET (or MI) relative to standard treatment through a 3-month follow-up. Preliminary analyses indicate a positive effect on retention: patients assigned to MI completed more counseling sessions than controls, and were more likely than controls to be still be enrolled in the program after one month.
