Motivational interventions for special populations.

The first presentation in this session of the 2008 NIDA Blending Conference, “Motivational Interventions for Special Populations,” provides an overview of the principles of motivational interviewing (MI) and the research supporting its efficacy. There have been several projects focused on MI training research, including two CTN protocols about Motivational Enhancement Therapy in special populations: CTN-0013 (MET in Pregnant Substance Users) and CTN-0021 (MET for Spanish-Speakers). Using MET for adolescents may also be effective — reasons why, along with conceptual challenges, are presented in the final third of the presentation.

The second presentation in this session, “Designing and Implementing a Spanish-Language Multi-Site MET Randomized Clinical Trial,” describes CTN-0021 (MET for Spanish-Speakers), including the reasons why MET might be particularly effective for this population and the challenges implementing it for Spanish-speakers might pose.
