HIV testing in drug abuse treatment: New paradigms.
This presentation begins with an update on revised CDC guidelines for HIV screening in health care settings, and describes the benefits of HIV testing and counseling in general. It then presents information about the latest technologies being used to conduct HIV testing and counseling, including the HIV rapid test, which uses blood from a simple finger stick and provides results in 20 minutes. The presentation then goes on to introduce one of the newest National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network protocols, CTN-0032, “HIV Rapid Testing and Counseling,” which seeks to evaluate the most effective strategy to ensure that persons in drug abuse treatment programs are tested for HIV and receive their HIV test results. Project investigators aim to begin randomizing participants for CTN-0032 in Fall, 2008.
