Development & Use of an Interactive Online Dashboard for CTN-0135

CTN-0135, Buprenorphine Treatment Engagement and Induction Problems Among Individuals Using Fentanyl, examined whether fentanyl use and challenges starting buprenorphine/naloxone treatment vary across different regions in the U.S.
The study also surveyed clinicians to better understand the challenges they face when starting buprenorphine treatment for patients using fentanyl and how they are adapting standard clinical protocols to better engage patients in care.
Recognizing that scientific journals have low overall reach, particularly for non-scientific audiences, the study team created an interactive online data dashboard to make the data more accessible.
After developing a draft, they asked 364 of the original survey participants (those who had agreed to future contact) to evaluate the dashboard’s usability.
Feedback was encouraging! Overall, 84.4% of respondents were at least somewhat satisfied with the dashboard, 91.7% said the results were relevant to clinical practice, and 77.7% said they would be likely to use a data dashboard to learn about study results.
Users praised the dashboard’s simplicity and ease of use. Suggestions for improvements included changes to the color scheme and font sizes and reducing scrolling.
Overall, the evaluation suggests that interactive online dashboards are a practical way to share research findings with clinicians. Future work should consider ways to involve users in the development process and consider differences in data visualization approaches and computer skills.
