This presentation will summarize emerging evidence for the efficacy of GLP-1 receptor agonists for substance use disorders. Recent and ongoing Phase 2 clinical trials will be reviewed, and key clinical and implementation issues discussed.
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least three (3) potential therapeutic benefits of GLP-1-based therapies for individuals with substance use disorder.
- Describe at least three (3) common side effects and three (3) safety considerations for GLP-1-based therapies.
- Explain at least three (3) GLP-1-based therapies currently under evaluation for substance use disorder.

About the presenter
Christian Hendershot, PhD, is Professor of Population and Public Health Sciences and Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, and Director of Clinical Research at the USC Institute for Addiction Science. His research utilizes clinical, cognitive, neuroscience and psychopharmacology methods to study the etiology and treatment of substance use disorders. His recent work has included early Phase 2 trials of incretin therapies for substance use disorder, including NIDA-funded projects evaluating the efficacy of GLP-1 receptor agonists for cigarette smoking.
